Pearl Jam suffers from the unfair curse of the great debut album. Their subsequent releases have been solid at worst and tremendous from time to time. They simply continue to please themselves, eschewing any trend that may make them the flavor of next week. On their latest eponymously titled release the Seattle scene survivors continue to do what they do best - deliver strong midtempo rockers and pepper the remainder of the release with slower introspective numbers. Will this be the trendy new comeback that everyone's looking for? Probably not. On the other hand, Pearl Jam have done nothing to tarnish their legacy of a great live band that consistently releases very good records.
