WINE

The Organic Grape

Let's go green with the red and white, and take a brief look at organic wines. Most likely the majority of us have not had the opportunity to try an organic wine or even understand what one is. However, many of us probably have already enjoyed one without knowledge that organic grapes, and or organic farming methods were used to produce the finished product in the glass.

Organic wines and the methods to create are nothing new. Many vineyards, especially in Europe, have been exercising this format for decades. Very similar to other organic foods, organic wines are made with organic grapes that have not been exposed to severe herbicides and or pesticides. Some vineyards take it as far as incorporating sustainable farming methods as well.

Sulfite free is a popular characteristic of an organic wine. And what better quality to have since there are many oenophile want-to-bees that, unfortunately, are allergic to the sulfites. Relief has arrived with organic wines. During the production process, sulfites are not added as is the case with traditional wines. This allows for the true flavor of the wine to be apparent. In most circumstances, this will be the most notable difference in an organic wine.

Frey

Featured wines of the month:

Frey 2005 Mendocino Zinfandel, $12.99

One of the most popular organic wines available, Frey has been producing wines since the early 1980's. This particular wine possesses strong tannins. Consider pouring it into a big bowl red glass and allow it to breathe, or if you so choose, hold it a few years before consuming. This full body wine is slightly bitter, acidic, earthy, with deep raspberry and blackberry flavors. After you allow it to breathe, a fine peppery finish develops. Keep in mind the absence of sulfites, which will reveal a different perspective on the taste.

Our Daily Red

Our Daily Red, 2005 California Red Wine, $8.99

USDA organic certified. This wine possesses a smoky bouquet. It is full bodied, smooth, and fruity with flavors of strawberry and raspberry. It has a slightly spicy finish. Bottom line, this wine rocks! And for only $8.99 or less, if you are so lucky, you will not be disappointed. Goes great with your daily bread, your daily pizza, or simply as your choice for your daily wine! This wine would go well with spicy foods such as Mexican or Indian. For being sulfite free, the average wine lover would be really pushed to notice.
