Autumn Rieslings

Fall is in the air and for me it is a return to the enjoyment of autumn rieslings. In fact, one of my most favorite fall things to do is to enjoy a crisp semi-sweet riesling on a nice sunny fall Sunday with friends. Not overly sweet or at all oakey, but smooth, crisp, low tannins, and fruity. The temperature in the glass can easily match the forecast of the day, and paired with the appropriate cheeses, nuts, and dried fruit, and of course the friends, the day becomes pure enjoyment.

Rieslings are the most recognized German wine. They have become so popular that they are produced throughout the entire German wine country. Rieslings grow well in climates with cooler evenings that increase their retention of sugar. In addition, they fair well in rocky soil allowing the grape to become rich in minerals which is evident in the taste. Alcohol content tends to be lower in these wines, and you will find that they present a lighter body making them smooth, dry to semi-dry, and with a crisp acidity. Rarely blended with other grapes, the flavor of a riesling is refreshing - presenting a palate of melons, apricots, apples, peaches, and of course a hint of minerals or earthiness.

Egon Muller

If you are more inclined to enjoy Californian rieslings you will find that they tend to be sweeter and heavier in body than their German counterparts. However, they too have become a popular chardonnay alternative.

Featured wines of the month:

Egon Muller 2004 Scharzhofberger Riesling QbA, $19.99

According to the winemaker, the best part of this wine is the balance between the minerality and the fruit tones of apples and limes. It possesses a strong acidity that continues to develop as it breathes. My research suggests that this wine makes for a wonderful introduction to the world of Rieslings.

Rudolph Miller

Rudolph Miller 2004 Riesling Pfalz, $7.99

A lower priced Riesling that is fun to try. The Rudolph Miller offers the typical characteristics found in a Riesling; crisp acidity, fruity, and earthy. Like many Rieslings it is lower in alcohol at 11%.
